Well…..the Cyprus New Year certainly came in with a ‘bang and a splash’ … even if it was in the shape of a series of spectacular thunderstorms and more rain than we’ve experienced here for many years! Whilst the island desperately needed rain, this was just rather a lot in a very short time span! The phrase “raining cats and dogs” certainly comes to mind!
However, the cold and wet weather didn’t prevent the Art Group resuming in January even if we did take “refuge” in the warmth of Andri’s at Zygi for our first two meetings.
We are now back home in Clubhouse Square and after such a long Christmas break it was agreed we needed some “warming up” workshops. We all decided ‘still life’ would be a good way to start and each group member brought an object to draw! What a range we had – from a steak hammer to a very large onion; a condiment set to a gourd, numerous interesting shaped vases, pomegranates and a very comical wooden duck! Our artists certainly proved they have very lively imaginations!
Under the guidance of Rosemary and using only charcoal on paper we proved we weren’t so rusty after all as, in the allotted time of ten minutes, some really amazing and skilled sketches were produced by everyone. Carried away with our success we moved on to drawing other objects – a great exercise and good fun ….. a sort of ‘still life musical chairs’! The morning certainly passed very quickly.
The following week we progressed to paint and canvas using some of the same objects with great results once again.
With so many beautiful wild flowers and blossom around these have been our latest challenge as the photos show…..what concentration!
These mini workshops seem to have proved very beneficial for us all so we are continuing with them for a few more weeks until we all feel ready to “let go” and tackle larger canvasses/paper with our own ideas….. more colourful fun ahead is predicted!
We are always happy to welcome new members and were especially pleased to have Trevor joining us this ‘term’. If you would like to follow Trevor’s example then please don’t hesitate to contact either Rosemary Corner (99496441) or Susan Lait (99535237). We meet every Tuesday morning between 09.30 and 12 noon in Clubhouse Square, Maroni.
