The Myth of the Detox
As it was Green Monday here in Cyprus this week there has been a lot of talk about “detoxing” and “cleansing the body of toxins” etc etc….it makes me sad that the so-called detox marketing industry has penetrated our psyche as much as the diet marketing industry…so much so that we believe in diets, diet products and detox products. They do after all make millions of pounds each year from feeding us lies and mistruths so their marketing is clever and feeds on our vulnerabilities, which is a sure fire way of making a sale.
Now I know you may well have been on a “diet” and lost weight…and you feel that the diet worked. But the true test of a diet is whether it keeps the weight off in the long-term: has it altered your relationship with food to the point that you no longer comfort eat/binge eat/treat yourself etc with sugar/salt/fat? This is very often the real issue behind weight gain: Filling an emotional void, quite literally. The same can be said of “detox” plans: OF COURSE you feel better when you up your fruit and veg intake, cut out the salt sugar, alcohol and fat! But that’s nothing to do with detox: it is because your body flourishes with these nutrients and if you were to eat like that all the time you could feel like that all the time!!
The fact is guys that there is no substitute or quick fix. Your liver does a grand job of filtering and removing waste products from the body and no expensive product is going to speed that up. What will speed up the removal of waste is not having so much waste to remove in the first place. This means EATING A HEALTHY BALANCED DIET all year round, staying hydrated and exercising regularly.
It’s not rocket science. And yes I know you have heard it all before….that’s because this advice has stood the test of time while the fads come and go…Before you buy into any company/book/product etc ask yourself what THEY have to gain from it…if it’s financial then find the evidence that it is actually going to benefit you in some way before parting with your cash.
