Maroni Art Group

This month marks the Maroni Art Group’s 20th anniversary, which we intend to celebrate throughout the year. Founded by Sue Lait and Rosemary Corner and with support from the Mukhtar and council, the group was immediately popular with people from Maroni and surrounding villages.

The Group has attracted those with distinct artistic talents as well as those who have been prepared to ‘have a go’ and found skills and interest in a variety of artistic mediums. Members have used oil paints, watercolours, acrylic and pastels as well as experiments with encaustic waxes and mixed mediums. The Group provides materials for members to try out different methods.

Over the years we have been privileged to be tutored by a number of talented local artists including Sylvia Woodcock-Clark and Dessie Michael. We have had brilliant demonstrations of different methods – most recently from Jane Corner, who has inspired several pieces including the assorted cockerels seen below:

Members have attended seminars and painting weekend sessions and we have enjoyed visits to artists’ studios in Larnaca and Nicosia. We’ve also had excursions to paint at a variety of sites such as Governor’s Beach, Zygi harbour and the Psematismenos Ancient Olive Grove. We also set up still life objects or portrait sessions as an alternative to just ‘doing our own thing’.

The Group has held several very successful exhibitions in Maroni over the years and hopes to do so again as part of the anniversary celebrations.

We have also produced calendars for many years, with prints of original paintings suitable for each month.

There is a very good social side to the group as well, with a break for coffee, home made cakes and chat being an important part of the meetings.

Thanks to the hospitality of Spyros and Maria we have also enjoyed delicious lunches at Piazza Maroni.

The Maroni Art Group meets every Tuesday morning from 09:30, at the Piazza Maroni. All are welcome to come and join us.
