In a recent statement, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that in view of the prolonged drought, which has resulted in the reduction of water reserves in the dams, the strict application of the Water Conservation (Special Measures) Law (Law 1/1991) will be observed, based on which it is prohibited to use hosepipes for washing footpaths, roads, porches, railings or motor vehicles. It should also be noted that it is not permitted to use domestic water to top up a swimming pool.
It emphasizes that any person who violates the Law is guilty of a criminal offence and on conviction is liable to imprisonment not exceeding three months, or to a fine not exceeding €513, or to both.

On the initiative of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, a programme for the awareness of the penalties for reducing the uncontrolled use and waste of water will be launched, as part of a series of measures to save water and deal with the drought.
According to the Water Development Department the current total reservoir storage is at 113.797MCM or 39.1% as opposed to 184.035 or 63.5% last year.
