The EU elections in Cyprus will take place on 26th May and EU nationals – including British citizens – who are registered to vote are eligible to vote in these elections (unless Brexit occurs in the interim). Voting is compulsory for all who are registered on the electoral list.
Cyprus comprises one national constituency, which means the whole electorate chooses from the same party lists of candidates to select six Members of the European Parliament (MEP).
Under EU law, all countries must use proportional representation voting systems, which means that the number of elected members from each party depends on the share of electoral votes obtained by that party.
Cyprus uses a preferential voting system, which gives the voters the option either to vote for a particular party, or to indicate their preferences within the party list they choose. Each voter may vote for two candidates provided they are from the same party list.
