Spring is almost upon us and the weather is improving, so the risk of wild fires is increasing. The Fire Department has announced that after 15th March anyone lighting fires outdoors could be subject to a fine.

After a long wet winter, it is no surprise that the island’s reservoirs are reaching capacity, with some overflowing. The dam at Kalavassos is no exception, as these photographs by Brian Lait demonstrate.

The first shot is from way back in September 2008, the year water was being brought from Greece in tankers. That’s an old copper mine you can see at the bottom of the reservoir. The other picture was taken last week. There is probably less than a meter to go before it will overflow. The bamboo in the foreground is floating on the water, having been ripped from upstream river banks during heavy downpours.
